Cycle tracking apps are useful, and many PCOS readers use them. But the more you understand the underlying signals your body produces, the less you need an app to translate them. The signals are there whether you log them or not.
Three Signals Worth Knowing
1. CERVICAL FLUID Changes texture predictably across the cycle. Days after period: dry or sticky. Mid-cycle: clear, stretchy, egg-white consistency — this is the fertile window. Post-ovulation: thicker, less abundant, often opaque.
For PCOS bodies that don't ovulate every cycle, the egg-white signal may be missing or weak. That itself is information; it suggests anovulation, which is a conversation worth having with your provider.
2. BASAL BODY TEMPERATURE Resting body temperature taken first thing in the morning, before getting up. Pre-ovulation: ~36.2-36.5°C. Post-ovulation: ~36.6-37.0°C. The shift is small but real.
For PCOS bodies, the temperature shift confirms whether ovulation actually occurred — apps that predict ovulation from cycle length alone are often wrong for PCOS.
3. PMS-LIKE SYMPTOMS THAT CYCLE Sore breasts, mood shift, bloating, food cravings — these signals tend to land 2-7 days before a period if you're ovulating. If they're absent, irregular, or arriving at random points in the month, your cycle may not be ovulatory.
What to Do With This Information
Two weeks of attention surfaces patterns that any app would take months to learn about you. Specifically:
- Whether you're ovulating (the fluid + temperature signals together confirm)
- What your real cycle length is (often different from the 28-day default most apps assume)
- Whether your symptoms cluster luteal vs follicular
